Those of use stuck with Hughesnet as our only option for (slightly) high speed internet know all too well about the FAP. For some time now when you exceeded the FAP your next 24 hours of bandwidth was so slow to be practically useless.
I got hung again yesterday when the kid used his Amazon.com gift cards to download a CD or 2. Being quite POed at Hughesnet once again I was surfing the net (albeit very slowly) looking yet again for fix, hack, or some work around for this%$@#%$ FAP when I found this blog: which led me to this Hughesnet page: (excerpt from that page) Each HughesNet subscriber receives one complimentary Restore Token each month on his or her billing date. You can use this free Token any time you exceed your Download Allowance. You can also purchase additional Tokens throughout the month, priced based on your plan’s Download Allowance.
I tried my free token.YES – It works! Finally.some small show of concern and response from Hughesnet! Originally Posted By Lawyerman: I avoided Hughesnet and went with a mobile broadband service. I've been very pleased.
THIS^ After ten years of 26.4K/sec dial up, I finally bit the bullet and got Mobile Broadband last year. Luckily, I got in before alltel got purchased by verizon and I still retain my unlimited dl. My work issued me a laptop recently and a Verizon mobile broadband modem.
What I don't understand is when I have both running, the Verizon(800k/sec) is considerably slower than the Alltel(1200k/sec)? I considered Hughesnet but with all of the bad reviews, I just had to stay away. Originally Posted By wtr100: so how much is hughest net $$$ out the door? What data rate do you get for $60 per month? Are higher data rates available?
I have used it a few times and it seemed that the data rate varied greatly (it may have been a function of how much snow was on the reflector), but I didn't measure it. It is a shame that Hughes doesn't increase their bandwidth.
There is no reason they can't, except that they apparently don't think that enough people would pay for it. At one time Hughes was planning on a very high bandwidth system that covered CONUS with multiple uplink and downlink sub-apertures. They were hoping to be cost competitive with landlines but gave up.
It still seems like a scaled down version would be a good solution for remote areas. Originally Posted By Lawyerman: I avoided Hughesnet and went with a mobile broadband service. Wesley I've found that Verizon mobile broadband sucks. Both Alltel and Sprint were MUCH faster. Originally Posted By Sharpshooter: I really feel for all the people who used Satellite Broadband. Additionally a WISP will most likely be cheaper than Hughes. If you can get it, wireless i'net is worlds better than satellite. I have no hope of getting dsl or cable, but get 2mb/s up and down for $50 from my wireless provider. My previous wireless provider said his longest shot was line of sight 25 miles. My current setup is a non line of sight, but just 5 miles. Check the following link to see if there's a wireless provider in your area.

Living out in the sticks has it's benefits, but connectivity is not one of them. It was either 1.5Mb/s DSL or Satellite Internet 10Mb/s for the same price. Pretty easy decision, no? Well, it turns out we were sold a pack of lies and half-truths.
I understand the 'up to' 10Mb/s part, but to average 3.5Mb/s is horse crap. Never once have I seen speeds of over 5Mb/s. Come to find out they actively throttle the users during peak hours and the 10Mb/s is only from 2am to 8am! Couple that with a 10Gb monthly bandwidth limit.
HughesNet Service Tools
We were trying to save money by streaming Netflix and Hulu instead of paying $100 for TV. Well, 2 weeks into our service and we hit our bandwidth cap already.just from streaming movies. We were 'assured' that no one reaches their bandwidth limit. I promise you they told us 20Gb. Turns out that's 'available' if you pay almost $100/month which also nets you.again.' UP TO' 15Mb/s. Now, we're getting FAP throttled for the next 2 weeks until it resets.
The throttling is so bad I can't stream anything anymore. I can only surf the net. HughesNet satellite internet is a borderline scam. My only other option is Wild Blue, but it's more of the same.just a different face. It's time to start petitioning the local cable company to extend their plant out to us. After all, they're only 2 blocks away from us. My plan is to map out where their plant ends, figure out the houses out of reach and go door to door asking for signatures agreeing to service if the cable co.
Extends out to us. Hopefully, I can get something rolling.
I tried not answering this but! The speed of your modem is controlled by the serial number and the site id plus your signal strength and cross polarization. The only way you are going to change the speed is if you work at the network ops center and have access to their computers.
Hughes is big time into the spy business and I suspect any attempt to hack there equipment will get your modem deactivated and it will be near impossible to get it turned back on. The speed is in the satelite and not your modem. The big guys like the military, big corporations, people paying for dedicated links get the speed.
Your home plan is the bottom of the ocean. You are not going to be doing heavy downloading on the home plan period. And if you already signed up and don't understand FAP you are are in for a big dissappoinment. The fap thing, on the home plan(the cheapest one) if you d/l like 160megs in a short time(a few hours) it will cut your speed to dial up speed. Your download will go from 70k (if your lucky) to 5k.
It will then take a few hours to recover to where you can get another 160If you plan on doing heavy downloading your not going to do very well. It can suck sometimes, like if you want to d/l a windows service pack, at 200+ megs, you can get the first 150mb in 10 minutes, then the next 50 will take 8 hours. And my sister in law has been tring to d/l tv shows(leagly) from itunes, she can only get about 1/2 of it before the speed dies, and she will cancel it again, try it again the next day, get half done and cancel it again. If your planning on d/l games, apps or movies it will take you a long time. Its not like cable when you can d/l at 400-600k day and night. For 10$ more you can double your fap to like 350mb.

For a limited period, to encourage new customers the company is giving $100 discount on any new connection. HughesNet is connecting people all over the United States through satellite internet at high speed. So if you are living in US and searching for a high speed internet connection, then you must try Hughes net. Its faster than dial-up yes but not by much, and they say you can download as much as you want from 2am to 7am but the download allowance resets slowly the next day if at all. I have nothing against Indian people but they don't even know what time zone i'm in.
The customer service is lacking majorly. The signal goes out far more often than my satellite TV.
The modems are quirky as hell. When you want to upgrade or downgrade your service you have to wait an hour or more without service and then you have to re-register the modem. I have no problem doing that but for someone that is not technically inclined it would be close to impossible. Also i paid for my equipment but i was still forced to lock into a 2 year contract for the installation or else pay for it.
If you live in the country without cable or DSL available, i would go with Hughes net again though or wild blue. Although i'm moving to the city soon and i'm going to drop Hughes net faster than the u.s. Dropped bush.
Anonymous It's much faster than dialup - until you hit their daily downhold limit. After that it's 24 hours of worst than dial-up speeds. You get a 200mg/day limit and there's no easy way to see how much you have used before you are penalized for exceeding it.
So becareful with on-line videos or gaming. There is also an unlimited downloading zone between 2am and 7am. Check out the Hughesnet 'Fair Access Policy' for more details. I'm a customer because it was either them or stay with dialup - but the inability to monitor my usage followed by a brutal penalty (especially when others in the household need the internet) have earned my undying hate. Undying hate.
